Myles Garrett drops bold statement on where Shedeur Sanders stands in Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback situation for 2026
Myles Garrett may have just revealed what the Cleveland Browns are looking to do at quarterback in 2026.
The Cleveland Browns’ hiring of Todd Monken was just one piece of their offseason puzzle.
Cleveland has to upgrade its roster on offense in a major way if it wants to compete, and that includes deciding who will be the quarterback.
After winning the final two games of the regular season, the Browns aren’t in a position to grab the draft’s top quarterback. There is a steep fall off after Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, so internal options have to be at play to start in 2026.
Myles Garrett says Shedeur Sanders will get his chance for the Browns
After a rocky Year 1 in the NFL following being a fifth-round pick, Sanders is likely to be in the mix to start for Cleveland in 2026. Browns star Myles Garrett is, of course, in the loop on the team’s plans, and he elaborated on that a bit.
“That’s who we’re looking at as the guy,” Garrett said of Sanders. “We’re going to give him a shot to prove that he’s the guy. We’re not going to give anyone that title until they go out there and earn it, and he was the last person to be on the field.
“He showed some flashes, so we’re going to give him an opportunity to really show what he can do.”
Sanders made seven starts for the Browns in 2025 and had a 3-4 record during that time. As a rookie, Sanders completed 57 percent of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
While multiple of the turnovers were on the pass catcher, Sanders had a bad knack for turning the rock over, and that can’t happen if he wants to be the guy for Cleveland.
The Browns will have other options at quarterback
The biggest question mark in the quarterback room will be Deshaun Watson. Cleveland is set to keep him around for at least one more season, and he’ll be healthy in 2026, following a pair of Achilles injuries that kept him sidelined in 2025. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Monken comes in and gives Watson another chance to show what he can do.
Dillon Gabriel is the other quarterback on the roster who made multiple starts as a rookie in 2025. Gabriel projects more as a backup, and the offense was very limited while he was on the field. The Oregon product can take care of the ball, but he won’t exactly stretch the field much.
Cleveland bringing in another veteran to compete with the current room is very much in play. If the Browns keep it a competition all the way up through training camp in August, it wouldn’t be shocking.
