Week 1 of the season revealed a lot about the Cleveland Browns in their 17-16 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Cleveland delivered a terrific defensive performance, led by Myles Garrett and what looks to be a very strong defensive line. On the other end, turnovers haunted the Browns, and Week 1 showed they still have a ways to go offensively. One bright spot was Garrett, fresh off his four-year, $120 million deal, showing exactly why he’s the cornerstone of this defense.
Myles Garrett sends strong message to the Browns after the Bengals game
“Keep your head up. We don’t lose two in a row. You’ve got to look at the film and get up off the canvas quick to another division opponent,” Garrett said of his message to the team. “A good team we’re facing, and it’s going to be very different styles. So, we have to be able to prepare and look ourselves in the mirror very quickly, see what adjustments we need to make, and get right back at it, because those guys aren’t slowing down and neither can we.”
Garrett finished with five tackles and two sacks against the Bengals, along with a few more hits on quarterback Joe Burrow. The defense held Cincinnati to just 141 total yards—a number few would have believed before kickoff. Burrow completed only 14 of 23 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, while Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase combined for just 59 yards. That’s a masterful effort, and it should have been enough to secure a win.
Next up is the Ravens, who present another tough challenge. That game, on the road, will test the Browns even further, especially with Baltimore coming off a 41-40 loss in which they blew a 15-point fourth-quarter lead. Still, that’s the task ahead for Cleveland, followed by three straight matchups with the NFC North. Garrett is right—the Browns must regroup quickly and be ready for what’s next.
