The Cleveland Browns made a big decision at the end of training camp to part ways with veteran K Dustin Hopkins and roll with K Andre Szmyt. Through one game against the Cincinnati Bengals, it looked like that decision may have backfired. Szmyt missed an extra point and a field goal against the Bengals, which would have probably won them the game. Browns fans wanted Szmyt run out of town after one game; there is no hiding that.

Kevin Stefanski and the Browns deserve credit for continuing to roll with their young kicker, and it paid off in Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers. Not only did Szmyt make a 35-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to get the Browns on the board, but he booted a 55-yard field goal to give Cleveland an upset win over the Packers. It was a full-circle moment for Szmyt, who turned into a hero at that moment just weeks after many fans wanted him gone.

Browns’ Myles Garrett sends message about Andre Szmyt

“He knows who he is. And one moment doesn’t define you,” Garrett said after the game. “He was just waiting for this opportunity to come again, and we knew he was ready. Talked to him and picked his brain, and he was ready for the moment. He was excited to get the opportunity with the game on the line again. He made the most of it, and we’re very proud of him.”

Garrett is right, it did look like Szmyt was ready for that moment. The 55-yard kick probably would have been good from at least 60 yards, and there was no doubt on the boot that split the uprights.

Field goals will be a key part of the Browns’ success this year. Cleveland doesn’t have a high-powered offense, so it has to capitalize anytime it can get points on the board. With an elite defense on the other side, it’s prudent that the Browns don’t waste opportunities.

Szmyt fulfilled his role to the fullest in Week 3, and he’s in good graces with Browns fans. Kicking is one of the hardest jobs in the sport because things can flip upside down in no time. After a rough start to his Browns tenure, Cleveland looks like it may have a kicker now.
