The worst has happened for the Cleveland Browns and now they have a decision to make.
It was known that DE Myles Garrett would not want to stick around if the front office of the Browns couldn’t convince him there was a firm plan in place to compete in the future.
With Garrett’s latest move, it appears that the Browns may have not been able to convince him of that in exit meetings. Cleveland’s premier franchise player has requested a trade in a statement.
“As a kid dreaming of the NFL, all I focused on was the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl- and that goal fuels me today more than ever. My love for the community of Northeast Ohio and the incredible fanbase of the Cleveland Browns has made this one of the toughest decisions of my life. These past eight years have shaped me into the man that I am today. While I've loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won't allow me to be complacent. The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl. With that in mind, I have requested to be traded from the Cleveland Browns.”
Cleveland now has a big decision to make
Just because Garrett requested the trade, does not mean the Browns have to trade him. The All-Pro pass rusher is not a free agent until 2027, though he could receive a massive extension this offseason. It sounds like winning is the bigger factor for Garrett, and that is no surprise because he is a huge competitor.
Trading Garrett would net the Browns a large return because he is only due $25 million on average for the remainder of his contract. Garrett will eventually command a deal that makes him the highest-paid defender in the league, but that is still two years away.
Cleveland must decide on the future of one of the biggest fan favorites that the city of Cleveland has ever seen. Garrett has racked up 102.5 sacks over eight seasons in Cleveland to become the franchise’s all-time leader in sacks. Trading Garrett would undoubtedly be a gut punch to a lot of fans.
Andrew Berry said just last week that Garrett would not be traded, we will now see if he plans to stand on that.
