Big-time NFL news broke on Monday that Myles Garrett has requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns.
Such a trade would be one of the biggest splashes in NFL history, as Garrett was the Defensive Player of the Year last year, and was just as good in 2024.
However, just because Garrett and his representation requested to be traded does not mean that the Browns have to fulfill it. According to one NFL executive via Dianna Russini, this could be a crazy breakup between the Browns and their star pass rusher.
Cleveland is trying to improve from a 3-14 season last year and getting rid of their best player would be a step in the wrong direction. The draft picks the Browns would get back aren’t for sure hits, so the Browns are conceding defeat the moment they trade Garrett unless they knock it out of the park with draft compensation.
Cleveland is likely to ask for at least two first-round picks and additional compensation. However, the Browns remain adamant that they won’t be moving Garrett. One side is going to give eventually and it’ll end with an extension or trade.
Garrett has 102.5 sacks in eight seasons with the Browns and has recorded at least 14 sacks in each of the last four seasons. The six-time Pro Bowler is a fan favorite in Northeast Ohio and the Browns trading him would upset a ton of fans.
Between now and any resolution, many reports are going to be leaked from both sides. As the executive told Russini, it may be time to buckle up and watch what unfolds. If the Browns do end up trading Garrett, it would become clear that they are heading toward a rebuild.
