The Cleveland Browns now have a full quarterback room following the 2025 NFL Draft and will likely have to make a key decision when training camp ends this fall.
Cleveland made headlines by selecting Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the third round, then doubled down at the position by drafting former Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders.
Sanders, once projected to go in the first or second round, fell to Day 3 and was selected in the fifth round. One former NFL star believes that could turn out to be the best thing for his career.
“He can’t see it now, but him slipping to where he slipped might’ve been the best thing that has ever happened to him,” former NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman said recently on Up & Adams. “Because when he ends up being a starter — and he will, he’s going to be the starter at some point — the expectations now, the weight is off his shoulders… I feel like Shedeur Sanders is in a position now where he can’t lose.”
Sanders and Gabriel join a quarterback room that already includes Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett. Watson is expected to miss most, if not all, of the season as he recovers from an Achilles injury. Watson and Pickett are the veterans of the group.
The Browns are expected to give all of their quarterbacks a chance to earn reps and compete for the starting job. It’s likely that Cleveland will rotate multiple quarterbacks this season, which could limit their chances of winning many games.
Time will tell if Sanders’ draft-day slide turns out to be the catalyst for a successful NFL career — but at least one former NFL player thinks it will be.
