Cleveland Browns could soon benefit from a need around the NFL that they don’t suffer from.
The Browns have a top-heavy cornerback room, more so than just about every team in the NFL. It just happens to be a major need for teams this offseason, one that could lead the Browns to trade one of their own. Not just a trade of their own, but the price could raise due to the need.
Cleveland has Denzel Ward and Martin Emerson Jr. as their outside boundary corners and they’ll likely be the duo for the foreseeable future. Former first-round pick Greg Newsome II has some outside experience with the Browns but now is primarily on the inside in the slot.
Newsome just wrapped up his third season with the team and it is hard to see the Browns paying their slot corner significant money. On the outside, corners get paid more and that was once an issue with Newsome, who wanted to be paid like an outside corner. Cleveland can not wrap up significant money into multiple players in the cornerback room. Ward is already paid and it’ll be at least a full year until they’ll need to rev up contract talks with Emerson.
The Browns drafted Cam Mitchell to be depth as an inside cornerback and he started three games as a rookie. Mitchell very well could be the guy that they develop into a bigger role. Doing so would open the door even wider to make a move and trade Newsome.
Newsome has started 39 of 41 games he’s played in over three seasons with two interceptions, one touchdown, and 128 tackles in that time.
A shortage of cornerbacks around the league is an opportunity for the Browns to gain capital on a player that they may not have in the long-term plans.
The NFL Combine starts next week and that’s where things pick up, so it’s just about time for things to heat up. Don’t be surprised if Newsome’s name begins to pop up.
