Week 3 did not go how the Cleveland Browns envisioned it going and now they are 1-2 on the season and need to steer the ship right once again.
Plenty went wrong for the Browns against the New York Giants in their 21-15 loss. Cleveland’s offense struggled mightily outside of their first possession and the defense was kept on the field far too long.
There is a post I’ve to take away from the game though and it is centered around Deshaun Watson’s top weapon. Amari Cooper had himself a bounce-back game that was much needed after a poor performance the first two weeks that was plagued by drops.
On the first first offensive play for Cleveland after forcing a fumble on the opening kickoff, Watson found Cooper up the left sideline for a 24-yard touchdown. Cooper would finish with seven catches for 86 yards and two touchdowns. In the combined two games, Cooper had just five catches for 27 yards and no scores.
“Keep giving him opportunities, keep giving him balls that he can catch down the field and yes, just give him a chance,” Watson said after the game. “And I think that’s the key as a quarterback, giving all our guys a chance to make plays. And he did that today and definitely want more out there, but we just got to keep going.”
Having Cooper get back to his normal level of play was key with tight end David Njoku still sidelined with an ankle injury. If the Browns want Watson to be in his best form, he needs the best version of Cooper.
While it all looked bad in the loss to the Giants, it was not. There were some good things to take away from the bad and Cooper’s performance led the way.
Browns loss to Giants comes with concerning problem that could derail Cleveland’s season
Not what the Browns wanted.
