Cleveland Browns have filled out their practice squad for the most part and it went about as expected for the most part.

The team opted to bring back 12 players that spent time with them in the preseason but there are a few newcomers to the team, as well.

Of the newcomers, P.J. Walker stands out at quarterback and Alex Leatherwood is interesting at tackle.

Walker brings a few starts to the table as well as time spent as a backup. Last year with the Carolina Panthers, Walker stepped in and started five games during the Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold fiasco. In the 2022 season, Walker threw three touchdowns to three interceptions to go along with 731 passing yards.

In the previous two seasons, Walker played in nine total games and had some turnover issues. But during the 2022 season, he looked like an improved quarterback that fixed some mechanics.

Looking across the league, there are teams that Walker could go to and prove their quarterback room. To be able to get this player on the practice squad is a win.

“Just felt like adding PJ Walker to that room was a good fit.” Kevin Stefanski said during his media availability today.

Walker brings the ability to create with his leg, a mold that he fits into with Deshaun Watson and Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The Browns will likely bring Walker up every Sunday as their No. 3 quarterback, though he won’t count against the number of players they can have active thanks to the new rule.

Leatherwood on the other hand is a project that needs some work. If there is anyone who is going to fix this project, it is none other than Cleveland offensive line coach Bill Callahan. Callahan is widely regarded as one of the best line coaches in the NFL and leads a really good unit with the Browns.

After being a first-round pick out of Alabama in 2021, Leatherwood started 17 games with the Las Vegas Raiders during his rookie season. At the end of the 2022 training camp, Leatherwood was released and signed with the Chicago Bears.

With the Bears last season, Leatherwood played in four games and did not make any starts. Coming to Cleveland, Leatherwood will be back with Jedrick Wills Jr., his former college teammate. Such fits sometimes allow a player to become more comfortable and it leads to better results. That is the hope here with the Browns, if it doesn’t work out nothing is hurt.

We have a firm look at what the Browns are going into the 2023 season with, now that rosters are complete for the most part outside of final moves heading into Week 1. Cleveland has the best roster they’ve had since returning to Northeast Ohio in 1999 and it’s not close.
