Cleveland Browns have set up their initial 53-man roster and it should be looked at as temporary in some spots.
There are moves that still have to happen for the Browns, so they can potentially bring players like OG Michael Dunn and DT Maurice Hurst back.
But at this time there are some notable things to wonder about when it comes to how the roster breaks down. They’ll all be resolved but the questions are valid for now.
Seven linebackers?
Myself and many other colleagues had the Browns keeping five, maybe six linebackers. There are seven on the initial depth chart and that’s a shock.
Anthony Walker Jr., Sione Takitaki, and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah were all locks. Jordan Kunaszyk is a good special teams linebacker and has shown the ability to give some depth on defense. The story of the preseason was about undrafted free agent Mohamoud Diabate and how he quickly showed he needed to be kept.
Matthew Adams missed the majority of the preseason due to injury but the Browns must believe he’s worth keeping for his special teams ability. With a torn MCL, it is expected that Kunaszyk will go to the injured reserve. That’ll solve the linebacker issue and they’ll add a player to another position.
Why did they keep Nick Harris?
When the Browns drafted Luke Wypler, the thought was that the writing was on the wall for the team to get rid of Harris. Not that Harris has been a bad player, he hasn’t. But he’s closer to the end of his rookie contract and Wypler could be the backup center for the foreseeable future.
Well, the Browns kept Harris on the initial 53-man roster and that’s questionable. Harris has shown he can only play center in the NFL, he’s been bullied when playing guard. It also should be mentioned that Wypler doesn’t look to be ready to contribute at guard if needed, either. So, now you’re dealing with two players behind Ethan Pocic who can only play center right now.
Five safeties on the roster
Cleveland opted to carry one more safety than they did last year, perhaps it’s because both guys earned it. Ronnie Hickman Jr. had a very good preseason and made himself into a roster lock after being signed as an undrafted free agent. On the other hand, D’Anthony Bell played well through camp and looked to belong, too.
Juan Thornhill, Grant Delpit, and Rodney McLeod were always going to be the top three players at safety. Through training camp, Hickman and Bell were thought to be battling it out. It turns out that the team wants them both to stick around.
The only reason this is questionable is that the Browns could have used this spot elsewhere, perhaps for a 10th defensive line player. I expect they bring back Maurice Hurst, but it’s a bit cloudy for now.
Browns surprise some by waiving preseason star Austin Watkins Jr.
A move by the Browns that has some people scratching their heads.
