The Cleveland Browns’ offense was good enough to win in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, but they lost the game 17-16. A missed field goal and a missed extra point were the difference, though two turnovers on passes that hit wide receivers in the hands played a role as well. Cleveland outgained Cincinnati 327-141 in total yardage, but couldn’t get going on the ground. Dylan Sampson had a couple of nice runs, but otherwise the rushing attack was shut down.

Jerome Ford managed just eight yards on six carries, making it clear the Browns can’t get rookie running back Quinshon Judkins back soon enough. Cleveland signed Judkins to a fully guaranteed rookie deal over the weekend, and now he’s set to take a major step toward returning to the field. This week will be huge for both Judkins and the Browns as they begin preparing for the Ravens.

Quinshon Judkins set to practice for the Browns later this week

Cleveland is expected to have its rookie running back on the practice field this week for the first time since OTAs months ago. A domestic violence charge against Judkins was no-billed in Florida last month, and while the NFL continues investigating whether he violated the Personal Conduct Policy, he will now begin practicing and ramping up toward his NFL debut.

The Browns can’t expect to win games by rushing for just 49 yards. Joe Flacco played well despite having to drop back 45 times, but that isn’t sustainable. Sampson finished with 29 yards on 2.4 yards per carry, and much of the lack of success stemmed from the offensive line getting beat up front. Judkins is expected to become the Browns’ primary back and should help stabilize the rushing attack. Ideally, Sampson will continue to serve as a Swiss Army knife for the offense like he was in Week 1.

Judkins’ return to practice will provide a first look at his conditioning once the pads come on. The former Buckeye surely stayed in shape while away from the team, but game shape is another challenge. Cleveland has the door open for Judkins to potentially make his NFL debut against the Ravens in Week 2. That would be big not only for Judkins but also for a Browns offense that badly needs him.
