Shedeur Sanders admits exactly what Cleveland Browns fans should want to hear from the rookie at this point in training camp
The rookie is growing with the Browns and he hasn’t even played in a game yet.
The Cleveland Browns are already dealing with some issues at the quarterback position due to injuries, which forced them to sign veteran Tyler Huntley—at least for the first preseason game.
Kenny Pickett, along with rookie quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, have all dealt with minor injuries over the past week. With Joe Flacco being the only fully healthy quarterback on the roster—and unlikely to play against Carolina—signing Huntley made sense.
Still, evaluating the rookie quarterbacks remains a priority, and that process will likely begin against the Panthers. Ahead of the game, Sanders opened up about the area where he feels he’s grown the most with the Browns so far.
“I would say mentally. I would definitely say mentally, even regardless if people—if media, you know—have good ways or bad ways to come about me, you know, I’m more mature in not making those same mistakes I made, you know, in college or whatever I did,” Sanders said on Monday. “I treat everybody with respect and with care, and whenever everybody gets over their own hate towards me for their own weird reasons, then, you know, everything will be back good. So that’s it. That’s where I grew the most, I’d say, mentally.”
Sanders was a fifth-round pick by the Browns but remains arguably the most recognizable name in the quarterback room, thanks in part to his last name and his father, Deion Sanders, who is the head coach at Colorado. Despite being a late-round pick, Sanders has a real shot to earn a spot on the Browns’ depth chart.
At some point during the 2025 season, it’s likely the Browns will give both rookie quarterbacks a chance to start as they evaluate the future of the position. Cleveland holds two first-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, where they could once again consider taking a quarterback. Sanders or Gabriel could change that outlook—but that’s easier said than done.
