Shedeur Sanders admitted he apologized to Dillon Gabriel during the Cleveland Browns’ Week 16 loss to the Buffalo Bills
Shedeur Sanders said he apologized to Dillon Gabriel for putting him in a bad spot during the Week 16 game against Buffalo.
The Cleveland Browns are 3-12 on the season after their latest loss to the Buffalo Bills and just two games remain on the season to try to overcome last year’s win goal of three.
Cleveland outgained the Bills by a 294-259 margin on Sunday, but the two turnovers by QB Shedeur Sanders ended up being a big difference. Sanders had an up-and-down day against Buffalo, including a bit of an injury scare in the second quarter when he was forced to exit with a cut on his pinky finger.
Shedeur Sanders says he apologized to Dillon Gabriel in Week 16
Sanders knows a thing or two about getting thrown into the fire as a backup without many reps leading up to a game. That happened to Sanders back in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens, when he was inserted into the game for Gabriel and went 4-of-16 passing with an interception.
“I did everything to come back because I didn’t want to put Dillon (Gabriel) in a bad situation, you know, like, since when I was a two (QB2),” Sanders explained after the game. “It’s tough to play that role because you don’t get reps. You don’t get anything. And I was talking to him. I said “My bad, bro, for putting you in that situation.” You know, because it’s not ideal and I want him to be prepared whenever he is out there, so that’s really how all that went.”
Sanders was 10-of-13 passing for 109 yards, a touchdown, and an interception before he suffered the cut. Following the injury, Sanders went 10-of-16 passing for 54 yards and an interception. Gabriel was sacked on his only snap deep in scoring territory when he took over for Sanders. It’s great unselfishness by Sanders to look out for his teammate in the situation, at the very least.
Now that Sanders has made five starts for the Browns, the rookie fifth-round pick has 1,103 passing yards, six touchdowns, and eight interceptions. After Gabriel made six starts for the Browns, they needed to evaluate their other rookie quarterback. With the Browns having two first-round picks next April, one likely in the top 3, they need to know whether they have to take a quarterback.
Sanders will have starts against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals left on the table. There isn’t a whole lot for the Browns to play for, they could secure the No. 2 overall draft pick next week with a loss. Sanders, though, will still be playing for his future role in Cleveland there last two games.
