The story of the weekend for the Cleveland Browns was the rookie quarterbacks taking the practice field in Berea.

Both Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders participated in rookie minicamp and took part in team drills. Cleveland surprised many by adding two quarterbacks through the draft. Part of that surprise was due to the Browns not expecting Sanders to be available in the fifth round—which is why he’s now on the roster.

Sanders enters the league with a well-known name, mostly because of his father, Deion Sanders, who is a vocal and prominent figure in the football world. The Browns rookie quarterback spoke about how his father paved the way for him.

“I’d say definitely, he gave us the spotlight to be able to do that. So, he gave us the opportunity,” Sanders said of his father. “That’s all you can ask for in any job or profession—just a chance to prove yourself,” Sanders said on Saturday. “The rest is up to you. I’m taking every snap out there, you know? I’m getting up after these hits. I’m the one throwing touchdowns. I’m the one who has to live it, day by day. That’s all he gave us—an opportunity. And we had to navigate from there and see what we’re about.”

Though unexpected, Sanders is now a fifth-round pick who must prove his worth to make the final roster. With four healthy quarterbacks competing for a job, Sanders will get a fair share of reps, even as a late-round selection. The Browns had interest in the Colorado product throughout the draft process and were thrilled to land him that late.

Sanders’ father was an outstanding athlete in his own right, and that legacy has brought added attention to the Browns quarterback. But Shedeur understands that while his father opened the door, it’s now up to him to do the work. That’s the right mindset—as long as he follows through.

Every rep will matter for Sanders, and the Browns will eventually need to make a decision on his roster spot in August.
