The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback room has already been hit hard by injuries during training camp, and another setback emerged Wednesday during the joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles.

After starting last week’s preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders had generated plenty of buzz.

Unfortunately, Sanders suffered an oblique injury early in Wednesday’s practice and was forced to miss team reps against the Eagles. The injury now puts him at serious risk of sitting out the Browns’ second preseason game.

Injury to Shedeur Sanders likely derailed Browns’ preseason plan vs. Eagles

Cleveland is already dealing with hamstring injuries to both Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett. Both participated in limited fashion on Wednesday, and Gabriel appears close to returning to game action. However, the Browns may have been planning to start Sanders against Philadelphia.

“If those guys could not play, yes,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said before practice when asked if Sanders would start Saturday. “We’re working through that. We’re always going to play our young guys a lot in these games, so we’ll see how it shakes out here over the next couple days.”

Of course, Cleveland still has Deshaun Watson rehabbing from his Achilles injury. Joe Flacco is essentially being kept in “bubble wrap” at this point as the only healthy quarterback in the room outside of Tyler Huntley—signed just last week—who hasn’t been hurt yet. As it stands, the Browns are likely to start Week 1 with Flacco under center against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Sanders impressed in the preseason opener, throwing two touchdown passes in the win over the Panthers. Replicating that performance against a much stronger team like the Eagles would have only added fuel to the hype train surrounding the rookie.

Instead, there is currently no timetable for Sanders’ return from the oblique injury. In the meantime, Cleveland may get an extended look at their other rookie quarterback in live game action.
