The Cleveland Browns are set to start their third different quarterback this Sunday on the road against the Las Vegas Raiders. With Dillon Gabriel in the concussion protocol, rookie QB Shedeur Sanders will make his first career start.

After coming in for Gabriel at halftime against the Baltimore Ravens last week, Sanders will get a much better opportunity to play well in Week 12. For the first time in his career, he’ll have a full week of practice reps with the starters.

“I would be doing a disservice to myself and a disservice to the organization if I didn’t feel like I am the guy,” Sanders said on Wednesday. “I did everything I need to, I’m doing everything I need to prepare to be the best version of myself as possible.”

Sanders finished just 4-of-16 passing against the Ravens with an interception and a fumble that was fortunately recovered by guard Wyatt Teller. Cleveland had to throw Sanders into action against a division rival after Gabriel’s concussion check at halftime, and it didn’t go well. Given the circumstances, it was easy to see that it was not going to go well.

Since moving from Joe Flacco to Gabriel, the Browns still haven’t gotten anything close to the quarterback play they need. Gabriel posted a 7–2 touchdown-to-interception ratio, but he’s averaging just 117 passing yards per game across six starts and has largely refused to push the ball downfield. Sanders offers a higher ceiling and a stronger arm than Gabriel, though Gabriel is the better processor at this point.

“I feel like I’m the guy, I know I’m the guy. You’ll just have to be able to see,” Sanders said Thursday. “The game gotta speak.”

The expectation in Cleveland is that the Browns will take a quarterback with one of their two first-round picks next April. Still, they need to evaluate both rookie quarterbacks currently on the roster, and that process takes a key step on Sunday with Sanders.
