The Cleveland Browns have a crowded quarterback room after doubling up at the position during last month’s NFL Draft.

Cleveland made its first surprise move by selecting former Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the third round. You might have thought that pick took the Browns out of the Shedeur Sanders sweepstakes—but it didn’t. When Sanders was still on the board in the fifth round, the Browns decided the value was too good to pass up.

Sanders recently participated in rookie minicamp and is getting acclimated to life in Northeast Ohio. The former Colorado star had an interesting first impression of one of his new teammates.

“We’re all different characters. It’s funny going there and seeing Joe [Flacco] every day. It’s fun to see him because I’m like, ‘Wow, I’m really with Joe Flacco right now—we’re on the same team,’” Sanders said rather starstruck on Up & Adams.

Joining a quarterback room that includes a Super Bowl champion who’s played at a high level for over a decade is a clear plus for both rookie quarterbacks.

Sanders and Gabriel will each have a chance to compete for a spot on the depth chart—possibly even for the starting job. The best-case scenario for the Browns is that one of the rookies hits, allowing the team to move on from Joe Flacco or Kenny Pickett, two veterans who are largely known quantities at this point in their careers.

The son of Deion Sanders seems to be taking the right approach to entering this new environment.

“Outside the room, people try to put us against each other, but inside the room we know we’re one.”

The Browns will continue with OTAs at the end of this month and into June. It will be the first opportunity to see Sanders and the other rookies on the field alongside the full team.
