This was certainly something.

The Cleveland Browns made a big change ahead of the Week 5 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, choosing to bench quarterback Joe Flacco in favor of rookie Dillon Gabriel. The Browns quarterback room has been a topic of interest since the 2025 draft, especially after they opted to select both Gabriel and Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

Gabriel has been the backup so far this year, with Sanders listed third on the depth chart. And after news of the quarterback change, reporters attempted to speak with Sanders. However, he responded by miming his answers.

Specifically, he was asked his reaction to remaining third on the depth chart with this move. And after miming his answer, one reporter followed it up by asking, “Vocally, anything to say about it?”

According to ESPN, a Browns team media relations staffer “ended the brief exchange with reporters,” and “did not comment on Sanders’ response.”

Was Shedeur Sanders’ mimed answers in response to Rex Ryan rather than Dillon Gabriel being named starting quarterback?

After the video of this interview went viral, Dallas Cowboys reporter Clarence Hill Jr pointed out that Shedeur Sanders’ antics were in response to Rex Ryan’s comments.

Recently, Ryan spoke about Sanders on Get Up, specifically related to the way he has been speaking to the media.

“This kid talks and he runs his mouth. Like he said, ‘I can be a starting quarterback’ with his arms crossed like this. Get your a** in the front row and study and do all that. If I know, the whole league knows. Quit being an embarrassment that way. You’ve got the talent to be the quarterback you should be. You should be embarrassed that you’re not the quarterback now,” Ryan said.

This was likely targeted at an interview Sanders did with ESPN Cleveland, stating that he is “ready to play right now.”

“If you see the quarterback play in the league right now, I know I’m capable of doing better than that,” Sanders said.
