Tennessee Titans’ coaching search could have the Cleveland Browns in a bad spot if they come calling
It would be bad news for the Browns if he became a serious contender for the job.
The Cleveland Browns are one of the worst teams in the NFL with a 1-5 record through six games so far. On Monday afternoon, the first coaching change of the 2025 season took place when the Tennessee Titans moved on from head coach Brian Callahan. It’s likely the first of several firings to come this year. Things aren’t going well in Cleveland either, and if there isn’t an uptick with things, a head coaching change could happen there as well. However, the Browns may have another issue on their hands with the Titans’ job now open.
Browns DC Jim Schwartz named as a possible candidate to be the next Titans head coach
It’s easy to identify the Browns’ strength — they have the makings of an elite defense and are among the league’s best on that side of the ball. The struggling offense keeps them from reaching their full potential, but Cleveland still boasts one of the NFL’s premier defenses. Jim Schwartz has done a terrific job as the Browns’ defensive coordinator, and it makes sense why the Titans could have interest in him. Following Callahan’s firing, A to Z Sports’ Easton Freeze floated the idea that Tennessee could target Schwartz:
“One more familiar Titans face for you: how about Browns DC Jim Schwartz? He was an advisor in Nashville at the end of the Vrabel tenure. He was also the head coach of the Lions over a decade ago, so he’s done the job before. He’s done a fantastic job in Cleveland and will be brought up in the coaching cycle.”
Schwartz’s first season with Cleveland in 2023 was a major success, earning him AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year honors. An elite defense and a late-season charge led by Joe Flacco on offense helped ignite things late in the year, leading the Browns to 11 wins. Cleveland wouldn’t have sniffed the playoffs that season without their No. 1-ranked defense and Myles Garrett’s Defensive Player of the Year campaign. Schwartz helped implement a tough, physical defensive identity that rarely allows big plays.
Before joining the Browns in 2023, Schwartz spent two seasons as a senior defensive assistant in Tennessee, following five years as the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s one of the most respected defensive coordinators in the league — proven, experienced, and successful. While his first head coaching stint with the Detroit Lions from 2009–2013 resulted in a 29-51 record, coaches evolve, and Schwartz has gained valuable experience — including a Super Bowl title with Philadelphia — since then.
Hiring Schwartz would be a move focused on establishing accountability and discipline in the locker room — traits that could be crucial for a young Titans team. While it’s still early and purely speculative, don’t be surprised if Schwartz’s name surfaces as a serious candidate for Tennessee’s head coaching job.
