Chris Jones and the Kansas City Chiefs are popular around the NFL right now due to his current holdout. He and San Francisco 49ers DE Nick Bosa are two players currently holding out that has given the media plenty to write about before the season starts.

For Cleveland Browns fans, it’s Jones that sticks out more, for a couple of reasons. If one of them were to be traded, it would be the Chiefs shipping off Jones. His former teammate and current Browns safety Juan Thornhill has sent Browns fans into a hit of a frenzy with a friendly post on X.

Following that post, Jones sent a reply calling Thornhill his brother. The two played multiple seasons together with the Chiefs and won two Super Bowls during that time.

With trade speculation floating around, of course Browns fans on X got ahold of it and started thinking about the possibility of Jones joining the team. It’s possible but it is unlikely. The star defensive tackle is looking for a deal similar to the one the Los Angeles Rams gave Aaron Donald, which is 3 years and $95 million.

If the Browns wanted to do such a thing, they’d have to move off of some contracts following this season. Za’Darius Smith, Wyatt Teller, and Jack Conklin all come to mind as players the Browns would have to trade or let walk.

Cleveland leads the NFL in cap space with over $37 million but the thought-to-be plan is to roll that over to alleviate things next year where they’re over $50 million over the cap threshold.

The thought of Jones with the Browns is an exciting one and they could make it work while keeping their current roster intact for this season, before offloading contracts next year. If the Browns won a Super Bowl, it would of course all be worth it.

A starting defensive line of Myles Garrett, Dalvin Tomlinson, Jones, and Smith would far and away be the best defensive line in football. Jones had 15.5 sacks last season from the interior and is deserving of a hefty contract, though Donald’s deal was earned over years. Jones is great but he hasn’t been on Donald’s level for the same amount of time.

Trading for Jones would take Cleveland’s 2025 first-round pick and a second-round pick in 2024, at least. Then, said team has to give him the big contract.

It seems to be that Jones is very serious about wanting to be paid, or else he won’t mind sitting out. The disgruntled star has already racked up $2 million in fines to show he’s serious.

In the end, this was likely just Thornhill letting Jones know they’re out there, if there’s any way it could work. It isn’t likely, so don’t hold your breath.
