We’re less than a week until legal tampering starts for NFL Free Agency and things are already beginning to pick up.
One of the free agents to watch from the Cleveland Browns will be QB Joe Flacco. Flacco is going to have some kind of market after revising his worth some with the Browns down the stretch of the 2023 season.
Today, I’m looking at three spots that Flacco could land in free agency. The 39-year-old continues to keep on playing.
New England Patriots
The Patriots are heading into a new era and will likely be selecting a quarterback in the top 5 of April’s NFL Draft. A common approach with a rookie is to pair him with a veteran.
Flacco worked with Patriots OC Alex Van Pelt during his time in Cleveland. With Van Pelt calling the offense in New England now, bringing in someone he was visibly comfortable operating with would be smart.
Cleveland Browns
There is only one way this happens and that is if Flacco does not have a chance to be a bridge quarterback elsewhere or a significant deal to be a backup. The Browns are not going to pay Flacco significant backup quarterback money just like they didn’t with Jacoby Brissett.
Flacco was magical for the Browns and is a big reason they pushed into the playoffs late. But his turnover issue was real and it bit them a few times, including in the playing game against the Houston Texans.
Minnesota Vikings
It’s up in the air whether Kirk Cousins stays in Minnesota or not. If not, they’re a team that could be taking Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy in the draft. If that’s the case, they’ll be grabbing a veteran to potentially start the season unless they want to throw him into the fire right away.
With Justin Jefferson there to throw to, Flacco would have no problem operating as the field general who throws the ball all over the field. He will produce a lot of what Cousins did in terms of a statue-like quarterback who has good arm talent to spread the ball.
Final word
I think it is a cool thing that Flacco is going to be playing football at 39 years old still and is going to have multiple teams interested in him during free agency. The veteran quarterback beat up on the Browns for many years before becoming just what the doctor ordered them in 2023. Now, he’s about to embark on another free agency cycle.
