The Cleveland Browns took 23 days to do it but they finally named Todd Monken as the next head coach of the franchise.

With the recent Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator now the head man in Cleveland, his first focus will be on building out the coaching staff. One big part of it has to be figured out quickly.

Jim Schwartz is the big question mark for the Browns after hiring Todd Monken

Monken was one of three candidates for the job in Cleveland, the others were defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase. Cleveland still has Schwartz under contract as defensive coordinator and they’d like to keep him on staff, allowing the team to keep two of their head coaching candidates.

Monken is set to be a first-time head coach and will turn 60 in just a few days. Cleveland’s best path forward with Monken would be to keep the veteran defensive mind around who has been the head coach of the defense the past three seasons.

Schwartz being in the mix and not getting the job, then staying on staff would be something that doesn’t happen all that often. Such a move would take the 59-year-old Schwartz putting any ego to the side and stepping back into his assistant role.

If the job in Cleveland were to open up at defensive coordinator, it would be a highly coveted job. The Browns have the makings of the league’s best defense over the last three seasons led by Myles Garrett. That’s an attractive reason that Schwartz should want to stay around.

Schwartz would either have to step away from coaching this season or be hired as a head coach elsewhere since he’s under contract.

With Monken having the head coach spot now filled, the action of order is figuring out what Schwartz wants to do. It’s clear what Cleveland wants him to do.
