The Cleveland Browns received news they didn’t want to hear over the weekend when rookie running back Quinshon Judkins was arrested on a charge of domestic violence in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

With rookies set to report on July 18 and veterans arriving by July 22, things are about to ramp up quickly in Berea.

When training camp begins, much of the focus will be on the offense—specifically the quarterback and running back positions. Cleveland is hosting an open quarterback competition with four players vying for the job, while the running back room has moved on from Nick Chubb and is now filled with youth and uncertainty.

As camp approaches, the Browns must face the possibility that Judkins may not report, complicating the early days of training camp.

Quinshon Judkins could join a growing number of NFL players expected to be holdouts

When the Los Angeles Chargers opened training camp last week, it was notable that rookie wide receiver Tre Harris was absent. Harris may be the first of many second-round picks sitting out as camps ramp up. The Cleveland Browns are partially responsible for the brewing holdout trend, having given their second-round pick, linebacker Carson Schwesinger, a fully guaranteed contract.

Cleveland followed Houston’s lead after the Texans signed WR Jayden Higgins—selected after Schwesinger—to a fully guaranteed deal. That move essentially ensured the Browns would do the same for the No. 33 overall pick.

Having Judkins on the field from the start of camp is important as the rookie prepares for his first NFL season. With Jerome Ford and Dylan Sampson also in the mix, Cleveland’s backfield is undergoing a major transition.

At some point, the standoff between second-round picks and teams over guaranteed deals will break—but it hasn’t happened yet. For now, Judkins remains firmly on holdout watch.
