The Cleveland Browns have the No. 2 selection in the NFL draft coming up and it will be their first selection in the opening round of the first time in three offseasons.
Cleveland has to hit on this pick and there is a strong belief that Cleveland bypasses a quarterback early to select Colorado WR/CB Travis Hunter coming off of his Heisman season.
Browns GM Andrew Berry is very high on Hunter and what he can be for the team. The Browns view him as a wideout first in the NFL.
“In terms of Travis Hunter, cornerback or receiver, the answer is 'yes.' He can play both and I think that's what makes him special," Berry said. "But we would see him as a receiver primarily first. But I think what makes him a bit of a unicorn is that he can do both at a high level.”
Travis Hunter sends a strong message to NFL teams looking to draft him
This is where it gets interesting. In an interview with CBS Sports last week, Hunter admitted he rather not play football than get stuck on one side of the football.
Upon meeting with teams around the league in the weeks leading up to the NFL draft, he’s made it clear he wants to continue playing both sides of the ball as a professional — something he told CBS Sports isn’t an issue for any club he’s met with. However, if an NFL team told him it’d only allow him to play either wide receiver or cornerback, Hunter would make it clear he’s not playing football at all.
“It’s never playing football again,” Hunter said via CBS Sports last week. “Because I’ve been doing it my whole life, and I love being on the football field. I feel like I could dominate on each side of the ball, so I really enjoy doing it.”
Cleveland’s path with Hunter is likely a full-time wide receiver and some ability to play on defense in certain packages. However, it is a bit concerning that Hunter would rather quit than be just a cornerback or just a wide receiver. Hunter is the best pure athlete in the draft and is going to give a team a talent that doesn’t come across often at all, if ever.
Hunter’s comment is enough to raise eyebrows but if the Browns were to draft him they’ll have a plan in place. Hitting on the pick is a must and Hunter should be a hit.
