The Cleveland Browns are getting bottom-three quarterback play and still have a winning record through seven games.
It’s not sustainable and the Browns need some kind of consistency from the position if they want to reach any goals. Following the 24-20 loss at the hands of the Seahawks, Kevin Stefanski provided a brief update on Deshaun Watson.
"He's fighting like crazy. He'll be back when he's ready,” Stefanski stated.
It was about as brief as it gets and that has been the theme with Watson since he was hurt against the Tennessee Titans in Week 3. He tried to return against the Indianapolis Colts but it was just too early and he left after a couple of drives.
In the meantime, Walker is completing just 51 percent of his passes with five interceptions to just one touchdown. Add in a fumble lost, and the Browns just aren’t giving themselves sustainable quarterback play.
"We didn't close the ballgame out and that's disappointing. We all share in it. We can't turn the ball over. That's continuing to hurt us,” Stefanski said after the Week 8 loss.
Watson has missed three full games now and the majority of the win over the Colts. The rotator cuff injury could continue to sideline him for another week or more. Then again, it wouldn’t surprise me if he was back against the Arizona Cardinals. That is how unknown things have been with the injury.
Cleveland is desperate for average quarterback play, they’re likely a one-loss team with as much. But they sit at 4-3 and it may be the crossroads for the team. Either they’re going to figure it out or things are going to continue to happen like they did in Week 8.
This week will be another week full of questions on Watson and his availability. Cleveland’s defense deserves at least a competent quarterback to help keep them off of the field.

Browns had some of both on display in the close loss.
