Following the playoff loss to the Houston Texans, the Browns decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.
It isn’t often that you see coaches fired after winning seasons, but that’s exactly what happened. Now, a bit after it’s happened, one individual who covers the NFL has shined some light on the situation.
“The reason he was let go in Cleveland was because ownership and Paul DePodesta, not Kevin Stefanski, were frustrated with the progress Deshaun Watson has made,” said Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. “I don’t think the people who made the decision [to fire Van Pelt] really knew his value to that staff.“
Van Pelt landed on his feet quickly and became the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. Cleveland’s new direction included hiring Ken Dorsey to take Van Pelt’s place.
Overall, Van Pelt was with the Browns for four seasons and had been around since Kevin Stefanski became the head coach in Cleveland.
The Browns know their quarterback needs to perform soon or they made the worst trade in NFL history. Perhaps getting the new coordinator will help. We are eventually going to see whether Van Pelt was the fall guy or not.
