Cleveland Browns watched their season take another turn in Week 7 in a loss against the Cincinnati Bengals. It was a game where the Browns likely lost starting quarterback Deshaun Watson for the season.
When Watson went down with his injury, the response from some folks in the crowd caught the attention of Watson’s teammates. Following the game, multiple players including Myles Garrett took a stand for Watson.
Watson was relieved by Dorian Thompson-Robinson until he came across a finger injury, and then the Browns turned to Jameis Winston. Winston threw a touchdown pass and was another player who addressed fans for booing Watson after the injury.
"I'm grateful I had a chance to serve Deshaun, but I am very upset with the reaction to a man who has had the world against him for the past four years when he put his body and life on the line for this city every single day,” Winston said after the game.
Watson has now played exactly 18 games with the Browns. Over the last three seasons, Watson has appeared in six games each with Cleveland. The suspension, then the shoulder injury, and now the Achilles injury have been the downfalls. That number of games over three seasons is by no means what the Browns envisioned when they gave up a boatload for him.
"I know you love this game. When I first got here, I knew these were some amazing fans,” Winston said. “But Deshaun (Watson) was treated badly and now has to overcome another obstacle. So, I'm going to support him. I'm going to lift him up, and I'm going to be there for him"
Cleveland takes on the Baltimore Ravens at home next week. Another tough AFC North game and at this time there is no clear answer on who the starting quarterback will be.
