Beating the Philadelphia Eagles looks much more realistic for the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL Kickoff after latest news
Can the Dallas Cowboys pull off the upset?
Most of the NFL world is expecting the Dallas Cowboys to lose to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday’s kickoff game.
That’s only understandable. Not only are the Eagles currently 7.5-point favorites ahead of the Week 1 clash, but they will also be raising their Super Bowl LIX banner, while the Cowboys try to bounce back from a losing season without Micah Parsons on the roster.
However, as daunting as their odds might appear, Wednesday’s injury updates make a Cowboys win a much more realistic outcome.
Tyler Guyton and Trevon Diggs are off the injury report
At one point in training camp, the Cowboys feared Guyton had suffered a torn ACL. He’s now off the injury report and in line to start Week 1. Meanwhile, Diggs is also off the report after a long offseason of health questions as he rehabbed away from the team, leading to the front office enforcing a $500,000 salary de-escalator on his contract.
The truth is, we don’t know what Guyton will look like in Year 2 following a rookie season filled with struggles. Guyton has admitted to the media and fans that he wasn’t good enough in 2024. But he’s certainly more prepared for game action than backup Nate Thomas would be in his first career game.
Dak Prescott trusting his pass protection will be huge in a game in which the Cowboys’ offense is expected to drop back and pass at a high rate. The Eagles’ run defense has fewer question marks than its secondary does.
As for Diggs’ expected return, it opens up the possibility of sliding DaRon Bland inside to play the nickel, giving new Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus a “best group of three,” including Kaiir Elam opposite of Diggs. That will be huge against A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, who make up one of the best WR duos in the league.
The Cowboys will need plenty of things to go right for them to pull off the road upset on Thursday night, but so far, the injury report hints at a close to 100% roster.
