If the Dallas Cowboys offseason didn’t feature any drama, you would have a very valid reason to be concerned. After all, Jerry Jones and Co. have ensured the “365 day a year soap opera” keeps people talking one way or another.

But I’ve got to tell you… I did not see this Brandon Aubrey saga coming. Not from a mile away. And it’s reaching new levels of ridiculousness by the minute.

Brandon Aubrey calls recent reports ‘fake’

Who needs burner accounts when you’re the best kicker in the NFL?

Aubrey directly commented on a clip from 105.3 The Fan on Instagram in which the hosts discuss the Dallas Morning News’ report on his contract demands. In the report, insider Calvin Watkins revealed two key numbers: The Cowboys offered Aubrey $7.5 million per year for the largest deal ever for a kicker, but the kicker’s camp is looking for nearly $10 million per year.

Aubrey’s comment was made up by one word: “Fake.”

A to Z Sports verified the comment was made, and is shown in the screenshot below.

What is fake, though?

It’s very difficult to know what Aubrey is referring to. Is his “fake” directed at the claims about his demand? About the Cowboys’ offer? Or was it simply aimed at the hosts’ talking points, which included saying $8 million per year is as high as you can go for a kicker?

According to Cowboys insider Bryan Broaddus, the kicker is talking about the team’s offer. Broaddus said it was “factual” the front office didn’t offer $7.5 million per year.

“(They offered) close to $7M,” Broaddus said after Aubrey’s comment. “They went above (the top of the market).”

More details are needed

From the outside looking in, it seems like Aubrey’s camp is asking for way too much. Harrison Butker, the highest-paid kicker in the league currently makes $6.4 million per year. Going all the way to $10 million would be a 56% increase, which is bonkers.

But to be fair, we don’t know what the guarantees, Year 1 cash flow, and other key metrics look like. We’ll see if this keeps becoming a bigger drama than it needs to be or if both sides are able to get on the same page before Dallas turns to the RFA tender.
