Brian Schottenheimer makes important statement about Micah Parsons two weeks away from Cowboys’ NFL Kickoff game vs Eagles
Is Parsons on the way?
The Micah Parsons saga has gotten uglier than expected for the Dallas Cowboys. According to recent reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the situation is different than CeeDee Lamb’s and Dak Prescott’s last year. The NFL insider insists he believes things are headed toward a divorce, whether now or in the future.
But head coach Brian Schottenheimer isn’t sweating any of it. The only thing he’s worried about right now is getting through with roster cuts and beating the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL Kickoff Game. He expects to have Parsons, the best player on the team, available.
“I think at the end of the day, we feel like (Micah Parsons) is going to be out there when we line up against Philadelphia in about 15 days,” Schottenheimer told reporters on Wednesday afternoon. “So yeah, I feel good about that.”
When asked if he believed that would be the case with or without a contract extension, Schottenheimer insisted: “I feel good that Micah is going to be out there when we face the Philadelphia Eagles.”
Parsons hasn’t practiced in all of training camp, though he’s been around the team. Defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton said earlier in the month that Micah knows the defense “backwards and forwards.”
Will Schottenheimer be correct about Parsons’ status come Week 1?
Of course, we can’t know for sure but Parsons is highly unlikely to miss games once the regular season starts. The Cowboys star defender stands to lose millions if he decides to miss paychecks. His salary for the 2025 season is $24 million, which is set to be paid to him in weekly paychecks. If, however, he doesn’t play, he doesn’t get his pay. It’s that simple. And knowing Dallas is in no rush to deal him way, it wouldn’t make sense for Parsons to miss out on deposits worth near $1.3 million for each game missed.
So when Schottenheimer confidently states he expects Parsons to play against the Eagles, he has good reason to. Additionally, the star defender has been involved with the team minus taking part of practice. His war is not with the players and coaches around him but with a front office that has yet to reach out to his agent, David Mulugheta, about getting a contract done in time for the season.
But then again, Parsons requesting a trade was an unexpected twist. So was making a loud statement that ventilated the messy details of a contract negotiation gone awry. Is there one more surprise coming down the pipe in the form of an official holdout? I wouldn’t bet on it. But we’ll find out soon.
