How can you not be excited about dropping 44 points on a division opponent to move up to second place in the division? Well, Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer is excited about the win but he doesn’t necessarily feel positive about where the team is at through seven weeks.

When asked postgame if he felt positive about the Cowboys’ record considering the slow start to the season, Schottenheimer was honest about his stance on the team.

“I take each game one game at a time, no one cares that we’re 3-3-1 right now,” Schottenheimer told reporters. “We’re going to care about where we’re at in January, that’s what’s going to motivate us.”

Schottenheimer’s stance on the win is the exact right one

I don’t know about you, but I think that’s the exact mindset Schottenheimer should have right now. Sure, it was a big win but this is a football team that has no room for complacency. The offense is clicking but as CeeDee Lamb said after his 110-yard performance, it left meet on the bone. The defense played much better forcing stops, but it’s still a unit with obvious areas for concern versus the run and pass.

“There’s things to clean up,” Schottenheimer said. “I mean, don’t fool yourselves. I’m not standing up here going, ‘Man, we’re the greatest team in the world.’ There’s things to clean up, and we’ll get right to work on that in the morning.”

At 3-3-1, the NFC East crown isn’t close yet but it’s also not quite out of reach. It’s a long season and the Cowboys know it. Right now, however, the offense is playing at a level that makes Dallas a longshot contender. An active trade deadline to upgrade the defense could turn them into a legit contender.

None of that matters for Schottenheimer, though, as his job is to have the 53 men on his roster ready to go. To them, the message is simple. No one cares about 3-3-1. It’s time to go to work.
