Here’s what we know about CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens being disciplined by the Cowboys on Monday night
Both Dallas Cowboys’ star wide receivers were on the sideline to start the game.
We knew the Dallas Cowboys defense would look different when it took the field on Monday Night Football against the Las Vegas Raiders. What we couldn’t have seen coming was the evident absence of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens on offense to start the game.
Both star wide receivers stood on the sidelines for the first series, which went three-and-out. Later in the broadcast, it was reported head coach Brian Schottenheimer had decided to sideline his playmakers as a “coach’s decision,” seemingly due to disciplinary reasons.
After the Cowboys’ 33-16 win, Schottenheimer briefly addressed the situation.
“It’s tough, made a coach’s decision,” Schottenheimer said. “There were some things that were missed and had a conversation with those guys.”
From there, Schottenheimer emphasized how positive Lamb’s and Pickens’ energy was the rest of the game. Upon being pressed for more context, the Cowboys coach simply insisted: “Couple of things missed.”
George Pickens had a different explanation for Schottenheimer’s decision
Oddly enough, Pickens initially offered an alternative explanation for Schottenheimer’s decision.
“Certain personnels we kind of thought they was going to come out in certain stuff, but they didn’t,” Pickens told reporters postgame. “They started kind of hunching down on the run, so we started throwing it around a little bit.”
When told Schottenheimer had described it as a couple of things missed, Pickens simply said: “That’s just between me and Schotty, honestly.”
CeeDee Lamb declined to answer questions about the situation altogether.
Schottenheimer’s decision was controversial but the right one
The decision to sit Lamb and Pickens for the first drive of the game caused a lot of opinions to be thrown around among fans, content creators, and media members. Without knowing the details of the situation, it’s tough to have a strong stance on what happened but one thing should be clear.
From Day 1, Schottenheimer has been clear about his intentions to build a strong culture. That starts with accountability. And reaching accountability doesn’t change despite the importance of the game or player in question. This was a must-win game on national TV and the Cowboys head coach didn’t flinch sending a message. You’ve got to appreciate that, at least.
