Dallas Cowboys make a decision that foreshadows big-name coaching departure
Defensive coordinator Christian Parker is already looking into coaches for his staff with the Dallas Cowboys.
Only a couple of days into the job, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker is already taking the first steps toward building his first staff as a coordinator. And it happens to be in a position for which the Cowboy have a big-name coach.
Cowboys targeting new DL coach
First up for Parker seems to be hiring a defensive line coach. With him specializing on the secondary, it only makes sense for his first hire to be one that addresses the front seven. For that, the Cowboys are interviewing Marcus Dixon, according to Todd Archer from ESPN.
Dixon spent the last couple of years coaching the Minnesota Vikings defensive line, but his contract is expired, which makes him free to sign elsewhere. Parker and Dixon were part of the same coaching staff at Denver from 2022 to 2023. With Dixon coaching the DL, the Vikings finished fifth in total sacks and third in pressure rate, per Pro Football Reference.
Dixon is also a former Cowboys player, spending time in the preseason and practice squad between the 2008 and 2010 seasons.
Dixon interview foreshadows big-name departure
Though Dixon would be a promising choice for Parker, his interview foreshadows an Aaron Whitecotton departure. When the Cowboys signed the latter last offseason, it was considered a big get as Whitecotton is one of the most well-known DL coaches in the NFL. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer respects him to the point of interviewing him for the DC opening.
Whitecotton’s departure might happen even if the Cowboys didn’t plan to look at other candidates: The Tennessee Titans requested an interview for Whitecotton to be their defensive coordinator, which would make plenty of sense considering a long history of working with Robert Saleh.
The process of building out Parker’s staff is only getting started.
