New Cowboys DC just outlined nickel as one of his biggest priorities, and here are 3 in-house options for the role

New Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker knows how important a nickel is for an NFL defense. Who are in-house options for the role?

Defensive coordinator Christian Parker wants a standout football player to play nickel for the Dallas Cowboys in 2026. In Philadelphia, where he was defensive pass game coordinator the last couple of years, he had All-Pro Cooper DeJean manning the slot. For him, it’s a crucial position.

“Very important,” Parker said of the nickel position on Wednesday. “That guy, he’s a corner sometimes, he’s a safety sometimes, he’s a backer sometimes. He’s a defensive end when he’s blitzing. You want to have a guy who has natural instincts and ability to feel the game and play football.”

Ideally, the Cowboys go out there in free agency and get new defensive coordinator Christian Parker a significant upgrade for the position. But if the front office fails to bring in someone outside the organization for the job, who could step up to the plate?

CB DaRon Bland

Bland is the easy answer. In 2025, he was mostly used as outside cornerback but he did log 200 snaps in the slot, per PFF. As a rookie in 2022, it was his primary position before moving outside in 2023 and setting the NFL record for the most pick-sixes in a single season.

We know a healthy Bland can man the slot, and he would be a solid choice for the role. But what will his play look like after his second foot surgery in as many years? The Cowboys have experienced enough injuries at cornerback in recent years to know Bland being his best self is far from guaranteed.

The Cowboys would be smart to address the cornerback room as if Bland isn’t going to be available just in case.

CB Reddy Steward

Steward’s contract is set to expire in March, but it wouldn’t take much to extend him.

Though he was brought in by Matt Eberflus, the Cowboys would be smart to consider bringing him back. In limited playing time, he showed the kind of physicality you want from a nickel that will be involved in the run game.

However, the Cowboys would be smart to think of him as a depth player rather than a standout starter.

S Markquese Bell

This is somewhat of a wild-card, but as first noted by The Athletic’s Ted Nguyen, Bell has the skillset to be the kind of “big nickel” that is becoming a growing trend around the NFL. He is used to playing closer to the box after being asked to play linebacker back in 2023. That year, he earned the highest coverage grade by PFF among linebackers.

Could the former undrafted free agent rise to a starting role in his fifth year in the NFL? He’s a longshot, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Parker took a long look at him this offseason.
