Dallas Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush's performance on the team's win over the Washington Commanders won him some more time as the team's starting QB following Dak Prescott's season-ending injury.
By completing 75% of his pass attempts and adding two passing touchdowns with no interceptions, it's clear Trey Lance's stay in the bench is going to extend a little longer if not for the entire season.
And now, heading into the Cowboys' Thanksgiving matchup against the New York Giants, Rush is being rewarded by the football gods with an early Christmas present.
The Cowboys are getting wide receiver Brandin Cooks back, who will be active for the first time since Week 4's win over the Giants. Cooks was expected to miss a shorter amount of time but he ended up missing seven games. His absence has been a large contributor to the offensive woes in Dallas.
His presence on the field will surely be felt as the Cowboys have gotten inconsistent results from the wide receiver room beyond CeeDee Lamb. Even Jalen Tolbert, who has emerged as the team's No. 2 receiver, has had ups and downs. On Sunday, he had a rough drop on what would've been a first down only to later catch a touchdown. Meanwhile, the Cowboys have given Ryan Flournoy, Jalen Brooks, and Jonathan Mingo chances at No. 3 but all have had good and bad moments.
Ultimately, it's hard to pretend Cooks' return changes things for the Cowboys in a major way but his speed should open up more options for Rush as well as make Lamb's life a little bit easier as defenses zero in on No. 88 when he's the only threat on the field.
How long will Cooks actually play remains to be seen but expect him to have a significant role on Thursday as the Cowboys were patient with his return. The offense needs all the spark it can get and Brandin should provide some relief.
In a corresponding move, the Cowboys placed rookie CB Caelen Carson and OL Asim Richards on Injured Reserve.
