Cowboys are once again looking into UFL talent and one player has an inside track to land a job

The Dallas Cowboys are no strangers to this team-building strategy: Signing UFL standouts.
They've been successful at it, too. Kicker Brandon Aubrey and return specialist KaVontae Turpin have become some of the best players in the NFL at their positions. The latter has even earned increased roles on offense as a wide receiver. Last year, cornerback Josh Butler was called upon as the team navigated injuries.
In other words, for the Cowboys, bringing in UFL players has been about much more than just adding "training camp bodies."
Ahead of the 2025 NFL season, the Cowboys are looking into the spring league once again and one position stands out as a target. It happens to be one Dallas is in urgent need of addressing: Defensive tackle.
Per Patrik Walker from DallasCowboys.com, the Cowboys are working out Perrion Winfrey and DeVere Levelston.
Starting with Winfrey, he's got former NFL experience including a 13-game season with the Cleveland Browns in 2022. His best football happened in the UFL with the Birmingham Stallions, though, being named the best defensive tackle in the league this year.
Notably, Winfrey has a relationship with Cowboys defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton, as he played for the New York Jets in 2023. That could serve as an inside track to a job and a spot on the roster. He's only 24 years old.
As for Levelston, he played for the Memphis Showboats and spend the 2024 season with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent.
It's relevant the two UFL standouts the Cowboys tried out are defensive tackles given the need for depth at the position, particularly at the nose spot where Dallas has no proven players. Mazi Smith has a long way to go in 2025 if we're going to feel comfortable about the position.
The Cowboys also worked out OT George Fant, CB Jerry Jacobs, and CB Robert Rochell this week. None of these played in the UFL, however.
