The Dallas Cowboys' coaching staff isn't about to go through any major changes if it's up to them.
The team is running it back with Mike McCarthy at head coach, meaning the entire offensive staff is likely to stay intact. On the defensive side of things, the Cowboys are reportedly expected to stick with Dan Quinn unless he leaves for a head coaching job.
On Monday, Quinn took an important step toward landing such a job.
Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Quinn is already slated for second interviews with the Tennessee Titans and the Washington Commanders. Both of those meetings are expected to take place in person this week. Per the same report, Quinn is also set to speak again with the Seattle Seahawks.
With so many head coaching candidates around the NFL, both experienced former head coaches and rising hotshot coordinators, Quinn is far from a guarantee to land one of these jobs. After all, his struggles late in 2023 can't be ignored by any of these franchises.
As good as Quinn is as a teacher and leader of men, there are fair questions to be asked about his scheme philosophy. With the Cowboys, for example, his hybrid defense was good for many situations but mightily struggled against Kyle Shanahan coaching tree teams like the 49ers and Packers. Considering such a coaching tree is quickly spreading through the NFL world, it'll be a question Quinn faces in these interviews.
But landing three "Round 2" conversations puts the Cowboys defensive coordinator one step closer toward leaving America's Team. We'll see if he crosses the finish line in the next few weeks.
