Unfortunately, the Dallas Cowboys need reinforcements at cornerback due to a foot injury to starter DaRon Bland that is expected to knock him out for a couple of weeks. But in the NFL, there’s always someone who benefits from another’s misfortune.

In this case, it’s likely two players fighting for a chance to play in Bland’s spot: Recent newcomer Reddy Steward and undrafted rookie Zion Childress.

Steward—who played for Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus last year—seems like the biggest winner. He was claimed off of waivers after cutdown day while Dallas cut multiple other cornerbacks. One of which, was Childress.

Childress could get a chance at playing after odd cut

The move was odd in the first place because Steward and Childress both specialize on playing in the slot. Before the Cowboys waived Childress, fans and media members thought he had a high chance of making the 53-man roster and even starting Week 1 if Trevon Diggs wasn’t ready to go. By waiving him though, they risked him to the wire while using a roster spot on Steward (The Cowboys also cut Andrew Booth and claimed CB Trikweze Bridges). In other words, the Cowboys waived a promising undrafted rookie for someone who hadn’t even spent time on the team during the offseason.

The Cowboys, however, did get Childress back to the practice squad. And now that Bland is set to be a gameday inactive, they’ll need additional depth at cornerback. That means using a practice squad elevation on Childress is a likely scenario in Week 2 versus the New York Giants.

If that’s the case, I still would expect Eberflus to start Steward at nickel. After all, he was willing to waive Childress to claim him in the first place. However, Steward has two NFL games worth of experience. That includes last Thursday’s matchup versus the Philadelphia Eagles. He needs to prove himself and I wouldn’t be surprised if Childress gets a chance to compete for the job on gameday.

As unfortunate as Bland’s injury is for everyone on the Cowboys, this is the kind of chance that rarely comes by inn the NFL. Let’s see if Childress is granted it on Saturday when elevations are announced. And of course, if he’s able to seize it in that case.
