Dallas Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy talks to reporters ahead of Week 8.

Oh, those Dallas Cowboys. Those headline-making, drama-generating, chaos-ensuing, media-dominating, gridiron-struggling Dallas Cowboys.

As if a 3-3 record and a season on the brink of downfall wasn't enough for drama purposes, the main characters sure know how to stir the pot even more. On Tuesday, owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan that he thought the Cowboys were designing bad plays and bad concepts, a direct shot at the coaching staff led by Mike McCarthy, who is on a contract year and whose seat is reaching scalding-hot temperature

On Wednesday, McCarthy responded, prompted by questions from reporters, and admitted that he hadn't heard Jones' interview himself but openly disagreed with the owner's take.

"I don't really have (a reaction to Jerry's comments)," McCarthy told the media. "I talk to Jerry all the time (…) but I don't think we have bad concepts and bad plays (chuckling), but I'll go back and check."

So yeah… that happened.

Ultimately, you can't really blame McCarthy for disagreeing with a statement directly attacking his very job but this is another display of things potentially going sour in Dallas quickly.

The owner is putting the team's struggles on coaches and players over the team building side of things (which he's responsible for), and the head coach is straight up laughing at Jones' comments on the state of the team.

I'm not saying any of this is particularly new in Dallas, or that it will keep the Cowboys from bouncing back, but it sure is an additional example of what a not-ideal operation looks like in the league.

For along time, this franchise has received criticism for the "circus" aspect of it, and how things aren't necessarily "all football, all the time." With that being said, whether or not McCarthy's plays are good or not is another conversation.

There's no doubt the offense must be cleaned up. Even going back to 2023, the Cowboys have lacked a solid run game. This year, spacing in the passing game has been questionable on film as players are consistently way too close to each other. Last year, the bye week was just what the doctor ordered for McCarthy's offense.

In 2024, it'll have to be the same if the Cowboys want to make the playoffs. Otherwise, it might not be long until we're talking about draft season…
