Brian Schottenheimer doubles down on message to Cowboys with latest controversial gameday decision in Week 2
The Dallas Cowboys head coach is not backing down from his stance ahead of team’s Week 2 game vs. Giants.
The Dallas Cowboys announced their inactive players for Week 2 against the New York Giants ninety minutes before kickoff. And just like in the opening game, there were multiple high-profile players we were keeping an eye on.
Most notably, fifth-round rookie running back Jaydon Blue is a healthy scratch once again after missing the team’s Week 1 matchup. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer told reporters earlier in the week that he wanted to see more consistency from him.
“(Blue) really is talented, but there’s a way you have to perform, especially with a mantra of ‘Compete every day,” Schottenheimer told reporters. “If you’re not putting it out there and you’re not doing right every day and if you take a step back [one day after performing well another], that’s going to get noticed.”
With this decision, Schottenheimer is standing firm on his message. Perhaps the Cowboys would have a more explosive running back committee with Blue among the 48 players active on gameday. But I respect the Cowboys coach doubling down on his message for players: You have to earn the right for playing time. Blue simply needs consistency. Until he shows it, he’s not playing.
Meanwhile, the coach is talking about Marist Liufau earning more playing time. There are rumors about backup tackle Nate Thomas putting pressure on the starters. Wide receiver Ryan Flournoy was signed to the 53-man roster after a down game from Jalen Tolbert. Mazi Smith has been inactive in back to back weeks despite being a former first-rounder. This team is competing inside and outside the locker room. I like it.
