Cowboys insider clears the air around trade speculation that would vastly improve Dallas’ offense in the 2025 NFL season

The Cowboys should be interested in trading for the rival running back. But will they?

With NFL roster cuts under a week away, trades are happening around the league as teams aim to maximize value for players they don’t see fitting into their 53-man rosters. But one large domino has yet to fall and it happens to be one Dallas Cowboys fans would love to see their team involved in knocking down.

I’m talking about Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. According to multiple reports, the Commanders intend to trade Robinson Jr. before cuts, in large part due to the meteoric rise from rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt.

But according to Cowboys insider Clarence Hill Jr. from All City DLLS, America’s Team is passing on the opportunity.

“A Dallas Cowboys source tells (Clarence Hill Jr.) the team is NOT interested in acquiring (Robinson),” posted the media outlet on X.

The news shouldn’t come as a surprise for Cowboys Nation

The Cowboys should be interested in upgrading the running back position for what likely will be a low cost for a starter-caliber player. However, it’s not often Dallas engages in bidding wars, especially this close to the start of the regular season. Additionally, the front office is one that typically insists on the “we like our guys” approach and after signing two veteran free agents and drafting a couple of rookies in April, it appears they’re set.

In their defense, the Commanders being an NFC East rival would probably mean Robinson Jr. has a higher price tag for them.

Earlier in the week, my A to Z Sports colleague Josh Taylor put together a story on potential trade offers submitted by other writers and this is what I came up with role-playing as the Cowboys GM:

“The reality is Robinson Jr. would be an instant upgrade for the Cowboys’ running back room. They should be in these sweepstakes if they want to give Brian Schottenheimer a better backfield, which is expected to be a big part of Dallas’ offense. But the veteran running back is also owed $3.4 million. If the front office makes an offer, I would expect it to be a low one.”

Taylor believes it will take more than that for a team to land Robinson Jr.: “We saw the 49ers trade RB Jordan Mason and a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings in March for a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 sixth-round pick, so that gives us an idea of what the Commanders could get for Robinson Jr. It’s reasonable to expect a fifth-round pick for an RB that can produce right away.”

According to Hill Jr.’s report, the Cowboys won’t be making an offer for the Commanders RB.

Javonte Williams it is, then

Heading into the preseason finale, expect Javonte Williams to spearhead the Cowboys RB room. Fifth-round rookie Jaydon Blue is likely making the roster along with fullback Hunter Luepke. The fourth—and potentially final roster spot on the position room—will come down to Miles Sanders, seventh-round rookie Phil Mafah, and Deuce Vaughn.
