Jerry Jones admittedly believes the Dallas Cowboys are a soap opera that runs 365 days a year and it's showing.
On Tuesday, the front office interviewed Brian Schottenheimer for the head coaching position, which was followed by a second round on Wednesday. With no more candidates scheduled for interviews and Kellen Moore's interview lasting well under three hours, all signs point toward Schottenheimer yet it hasn't been made official.
"Look for the Cowboys to cross the finish line on hiring Brian Schottenheimer no later than Friday, possibly today," insider Clarence Hill Jr. from All City DLLS posted on X on Thursday morning.
Hill Jr.'s post implies the decision is made and it's only a matter of announcing it. Based on how the Cowboys operate, that could take as long as they want it to.
Schottenheimer's potential hire is already causing disappointed reactions from fans. Though it's true he could end up being successful, he's got the charisma and control of the room to be a good leader, what's truly underwhelming is the Cowboys' process.
The team officially interviewed four candidates, two of which were already familiar faces to the front office in Moore and Schottenheimer. Six other teams in the NFL conducted head coaching interviews this year, all of which had longer lists of interviews and appeared to perform due diligence. What the Cowboys did more closely resembles what I did in high school at 11:30 p.m. when homework was due the next morning.
Can a half-effort coaching search produce high-end results? It'll be up to Schottenheimer but for that to happen he'll need the support from the front office. I'm not sure Jason Witten being on the staff (which he's expected to per multiple reports) qualifies as that. I'm not convinced Stephen Jones warning fans about another tight offseason will be the kind of backup the new Cowboys head coach needs.
As it goes with NFL head coaches, we'll just have to wait and see what he's got.
