The Dallas Cowboys made the controversial decision to stick with head coach Mike McCarthy for the 2024 NFL season and that's caused many fans to be upset.
You can't blame Cowboys Nation, a fanbase that's been waiting for almost 30 years to get back to an NFC Championship Game after getting spoiled with five Super Bowl wins, including three in the 1990s.
The Cowboys' decision couldn't have been an easy one as it's true that winning 12 games in three consecutive season would be a daunting task for many coaches. However, concerns about McCarthy's offense closely resemble what happened in his final years over at Green Bay and what happened on Sunday was the signs of an unprepared and utterly outcoached team.
This is all to say, concerns about the latest McCarthy news are well-founded despite the coach's regular season success.
However, I thought it relevant to see Jake Ferguson's simple yet powerful reaction to the coaching update on Twitter/X. On Wednesday night, the rising star tight end posted a clip of McCarthy's famous chain celebration with the song "Many Men" from 50 Cent playing over the clip.
For context, the celebration in the video is from last year's playoff win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the song choice is particularly relevant as it's the tune Cowboys players used to welcome back McCarthy from his appendix surgery during the regular season.
Although it's simple, Ferguson's reaction shows exactly why the Cowboys are running it back with McCarthy. The locker room in Dallas is all-in on the head coach and it hasn't been kept a secret at all.
After the painful and embarrassing playoff loss to the Packers, Prescott took the bullet, saying that if McCarthy was in the hot seat they should add him to the list, too.
The day after, Jourdan Lewis offered this reflection: "When he wasn't here, I mean, we were we were struggling to be over .500"
The Cowboys have made their choice. Jane Slater reported earlier in the week that the overall feeling among players was that they let their coach down. That paired with Ferguson's reaction, might just mean the Cowboys will have a fire lit in them next season.
With no significant changes to the coaching staff (yet), fans better hope that's exactly the case.
Cowboys: Jerry Jones’ justification for bringing back Mike McCarthy
Not a great argument.
