The Dallas Cowboys could be welcoming back Kellen Moore into the NFC East but this time as enemies rather than friends.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Philadelphia Eagles have requested an interview with Moore for their vacant offensive coordinator position.
Since "mutually parting ways" with the Cowboys last year, Moore coached Justin Herbert's offense over in Los Angeles. After news broke that Jim Harbaugh is set to take over the Chargers, it likely means Moore has one foot out of the door as the former is expected to bring in his own staff.
Moore's coaching career has been a really intriguing one since it started. After being a backup quarterback for a handful of years, he spent just one year coaching quarterbacks in Dallas before being promoted to offensive coordinator.
He's been reportedly well-regarded among league circles yet hasn't been perfect as a play-caller. In four years leading the Cowboys offense, he led one of the most efficient units in the league but struggled with situational football and in the postseason. In L.A., he couldn't get the run game going. Consider this from our coaching profile on Moore:
"Before Herbert's injury, Moore's offense ranked Top 10 in the NFL in dropback EPA/play and success rate through Week 13. That's all fine and well but L.A. was 32nd in rushing success rate and 27th in EPA/play."
It's interesting to point out that the Eagles are likely interested in establishing a strong rushing offense so Moore might but be the best fit. However, Philly has a solid reason to be interested in Moore: When he was coaching Dallas' offense, he consistently cooked the Eagles defense.
Between 2019 and 2022, Moore's offense scored 37+ points five different times. You could argue it could've been more had they played more meaningful games. Moore just had a knack for destroying the Eagles' schemes through Dak Prescott.
How serious the Eagles' interest is in Moore remains to be seen. But there's no question if he rejoins the division, the Cowboys-Eagles rivalry would have one of the most intriguing coaching matchups in the NFL come 2024. A former friend joining the team's biggest rival.
