It's no secret the Dallas Cowboys might be looking for a new head coach in 2025.
Although there have been a lot of comments showing support for Mike McCarthy, including from Dak Prescott and Jerry Jones, the fact that he's not under contract beyond 2024 makes it a strong possibility.
Fans desperate for any kind of change might be all for it and some might venture to imagine the likes of Ben Johnson, the highly-touted Detroit Lions offensive coordinator, as the next Cowboys head coach. However, that remains unlikely to happen.
Sure, they might have a different head coach next year. But the Cowboys have shown us time and time again they value experienced coaches with a solid resumé over young coaches who'd be new to the job.
In other words, they like to play it safe.
That's why for a long time, many have speculated about Bill Belichick's chances of ending up the Cowboys head coach. After all, reports on Jerry Jones liking Belichick have always been there. He fits the mold of what they seem to like.
However, that speculation might come to an end soon if Belichick takes the job at North Carolina in the college football world. According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, "clarity on his future is expected soon, whether he takes or passes on the job."
The phrasing certainly makes it seem like the decision is up to Belichick, as it strongly suggests the job has been offered to him.
Personally, I believe betting on Belichick would be a mistake for the Cowboys, so if the does take it, they might be saved from themselves. Belichick's style would be likely to clash with the way things are done in Dallas, where the front office has a lot of say in the football decisions, for better or worse.
But mostly, as much respect as I have for the six-time Super Bowl champion, I gotta say I don't think he'd bring in the kind of coaching staff the Cowboys desperately need and I'd be concerned about Belichick the general manager keeping the team in its conservative team-building approach.
There's a reason why NFL teams aren't seemingly willing to bet on him, as he was reportedly not offered any coaching vacancy last year, and that's likely his unwillingness to adapt to the modern league.
If he heads to the Tarheels in the near future, it might be the best thing that could happen to the Cowboys if they were even remotely interested in turning to him.
