Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is in a tough position in 2024.

It's him against the world as he enters a contract year in which fans will have a tough time buying into him after three disappointing playoff losses, headlined by Sunday's embarrassing loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Following news confirming him as head coach for next season after rumors about his being in the hot seat, McCarthy took the podium to address reporters.

"It's still raw right now," McCarthy confessed to reporters when asked about what changes needed to happen. "I'm still a little numb right now."

Ultimately, McCarthy unsurprisingly offered that the team needed to build on what worked for them during the regular season and expressed confidence on his team moving forward.

"My message (to fans) would be this, we've established a championship program, it's just not the world championship yet," McCarthy said. "We know how to win. We know how to train to win. We have the right people. But we have not crossed the threshold winning playoff games. (…) I know how to win. We will get over that threshold."

That's all fine and well but it's just words, after all. Fans at home will likely hear or read those words and roll their eyes.

That's probably why Jane Slater from NFL Network hit Mike with a savage, hard-hitting question that everyone was dying to ask. The question is so good that I need to include it word for word: You've talked about why the fans should buy into the team but why should they buy into you?

"I believe the direction, the leadership, everything is in place," McCarthy answered. "I'm not very comfortable talking about myself but I came here to win a championship, I didn't come here to get a second contract, I came to Dallas to win the world championship. That's why I'm standing here. Buy into us."

It's a good, strong answer. But unfortunately, it likely won't be enough to fully rally Cowboys Nation behind the head coach. The truth is there's only one way McCarthy will have fans buy into him and he won't be able to pull it off in the offseason nor in September, October, November, or December.

To get fans to truly believe yet again, McCarthy's Cowboys will need to get it done in January 2025.
