Well, well, well. In the age of social media, NFL players are able to send a fanbase into a frenzy by simply typing something as simple as an emoji and posting it on Twitter.
On Monday evening, Dallas Cowboys running back Dalvin Cook gave us the latest example, as he simply tweeted a “4” emoji, causing dozens of Cowboys fans to respond and quote the message speculating about the meaning of the message.
Many still assume the tweet could mean Cook will finally be activated for gameday to make his Cowboys debut on “Thursday Night Football” by being elevated from the practice squad (even though that might not boost the running game that much). After all, following the 2021 season, he switched back to wearing No. 4, his jersey number at Florida State.
One fan responded "I hope this means something." Another went with "Means he is going to be active in Week 4." Many more responses of the sort followed.
However, I hate to be the one to bring an alternative meaning for the tweet, one that might disappoint fans: You see, Dalvin now wears No. 20 for the Cowboys, as Dak Prescott occupies No. 4.
But you know who does wear no. 4? Dalvin’s brother, James, who plays for the Buffalo Bills. If Cowboys fans don’t remember him, it’s because they’re still in denial since the day James single-handedly rushed for 179 yards during the 2023 season.
Dalvin’s tweet came out at 5:41 p.m. CT, under an hour away from his brother’s Monday night matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. If I had to bet, that’s what Cook’s tweet was about.
But make no mistake about it: Dalvin Cook could realistically be active against the Giants on Thursday. Last weekend, Cowboys running backs struggled once again to get anything going, with Rico Dowdle being the potential exception. The Cowboys might want to shake things up by asking Dalvin to step up on primetime.
If that’s the case, chances are we won’t find out until minutes before the game, as teams playing on a short week don’t need to announce their practice squad elevations until inactives come out 90 minutes before kickoff.
And if you expect any hints from the coaching staff, consider what Mike McCarthy told reporters when asked about playing Cook:
“I'm not here to make any proclamations on what could be next.”
Cowboys QB Dak Prescott’s postgame message is one CeeDee Lamb needs to hear
WR1 needs to be better.
