NFL insider's report will add fuel to Cowboys' Bill Belichick narrative that won't go away in all of 2024

Whatever happens in 2024, the Dallas Cowboys might just find themselves in a position to blow it all up in 2025. Head coach Mike McCarthy will coach on a contract year and Dak Prescott's deal is at least currently set to expire after next season (which is likely to change).

That fact combined with what NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero said live on TV hours before Super Bowl LVIII will keep many fans and media members speculating about a potential marriage between the Cowboys and Bill Belichick.

The Belichick-Cowboys discourse, regardless of how much sense it makes or doesn't make, is here to stay for a good while, taking the place of the finally-ending Sean Payton storylines that haunted the fanbase for years.

"Belichick does want to continue to coach and the expectation right now within the league is Belichick is coaching somewhere come 2025," Pelissero said from Allegiant Stadium's field. "Multiple owners reached out to Belichick about next year's hiring cycle."

Is there a chance one of those owners was Jones? Considering McCarthy's current standing with the team, it's hard to dismiss the idea.

Owner Jerry Jones, who has publicly said before that if the media is talking about the Cowboys, then he's doing his job, won't do anything to water down such a narrative.

"I know (Belichick) personally and I like him,” Jones told Yahoo Sports earlier this year. “There’s no doubt in my mind we could work together. None. None.”

Pelissero's words should come as no surprise to NFL fans. While many assumed Belichick was headed to Atlanta for the 2024 season, the Falcons opting for Raheem Morris will make him a very intriguing talking point for the next year of football. Even more so for teams with a head coach on a hot seat, like the Cowboys' McCarthy.

Would Bill Belichick actually make sense for the Cowboys?

We're obviously talking about one of the greatest coaches to ever do it if not the GOAT, here. However, it's only fai to point out that he hasn't quite been the same since Tom Brady left New England. Heck, No. 12 left because of Belichick.

He brought in Matt Patricia as offensive coordinator and threw a irreversible wrench in Mac Jones' career. His defenses remain very solid but other than that there's a lot to not like.

In the case of the Cowboys, specifically, one major flaw is his desire to control personnel decisions. Who knows what Belichick's stance on it would be if made an offer by Dallas or other teams next year, but I'm willing to assume he still wants some level of control and perhaps that explains the lack of interviews this offseason.

The Cowboys are more than set and content with how they put together their roster. I'm not sure they'd be a fan of somebody who wants to take the decision-making from Will McClay and Stephen Jones.

For now, though, it's all about McCarthy and 2024. Can the Cowboys achieve the high, high bar set for the head coach in the upcoming season? Buckle up, it's going to be a long, long ride.
