Just days ago, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones claimed on 105.3 The Fan that as long as the world was talking about America's Team, the franchise was doing its job.
It was quite the tone-deaf comment from Jones live on air given the circumstances: The Cowboys aren't making significant changes to the team or its coaching staff following their third consecutive playoff loss after an embarrassing wild-card performance versus the Green Bay Packers.
As fans criticized the team for not truly caring about winning, Jones basically explained what his priority was: Have people talk Cowboys football.
On Tuesday at the Senior Bowl, Jones took a different strategy claiming Dallas was about to push all the chips in ahead of the 2024 NFL season.
"We will be going all-in," Jones told reporters via Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram. "I would say that you will see us this coming year not build it for the future."
That's a big promise to make if you're Jerry Jones. He essentially said the Cowboys' additions – be it free agency or through the draft – will be all about winning this upcoming year. Considering the Draft is a little bit of a hit or miss process, that could imply a more aggressive approach in free agency.
Perhaps Dallas could double down on last year's strategy to trade draft picks away. That's how the team got Brandin Cooks and Stephon Gilmore and there's no denying those two worked out just fine. Could the Cowboys take it up a notch in terms of team-building aggression?
Never say never but Cowboys fans should beware buying into Jones' sales pitch. We know he's a good businessman and he'll say whatever it takes to get the fans riled up. But years of stubbornness are going to be tough to cleanse from the franchise with one snap of the fingers.
They know how they like to build teams and they know their jobs aren't conditioned to their performance because they own the team in the first place.
And keep in mind, they're seemingly not as desperate as the fans. There's even some level of content around the front office.
"I like the fact that we’re hanging around the rim," Jones said via Michael Gehlken from Dallas Morning News. "We're not getting the ball in but we are hanging around the rim. Let’s not discount hanging around the rim."
We know, Jerry. And that's the exact problem. Fans should beware buying into such a promise because we've heard it all before. Right now, the front office deserves a "see it to believe it" response from Cowboys Nation.
Jones and the Cowboys have no excuse moving forward: If they strongly believe they're that close with their current setup and if they truly are aiming to go all in to get over the hump, an aggressive mindset in the offseason will be a must. With the coaching staff running it back for another year, that's the one thing that could truly be different about the team: Talent on the roster.
