The Dallas Cowboys are interviewing multiple defensive coordinator candidates this week following Dan Quinn's departure.
That includes in-house candidates Al Harris and Aden Durde but not Joe Whitt Jr., who will take over as defensive coordinator with the Washington Commanders.
But there are multiple reasons to believe the Cowboys will be looking into somebody with head coaching experience. Mainly, the two outside candidates they're officially interviewing are Ron Rivera and Mike Zimmer. If we go back to 2021, the team went with Quinn – also with HC experience – to replace the terrible Mike Nolan.
That's why Zimmer is slowly becoming the favorite to land the job when it's all said and done. Not only does he fit the "previous HC" box but the Cowboys have famously liked him ever since he coached the team's defense in the early 2000s.
Well, if you needed any more reasons to brace for a Mike Zimmer hire, A to Z Sports' own Will Steele dropped a major nugget about the Cowboys' search on Monday morning during his daily Cowboys show.
"I've been told on Mike Zimmer, that this is possibly being pushed by the Joneses," A to Z Sports' Will Steele said. "But I also don't necessarily think McCarthy is comfortable with it."
That is quite the piece of info from Steele and it could mean an odd dynamic is in the horizon if Zimmer does get the job. By the sounds of it, Zimmer would be a front office hire more than anything else.
It's already set to be a tense year in Dallas with Mike McCarthy coaching on the final year of his deal. If the front office chooses somebody who doesn't make the HC comfortable, they'll need to be very careful for it not to translate into locker room issues.
On the other hand, it could be the right type of shake up the Cowboys need as Zimmer is more of an old-school, tough personality that could inject some much needed discipline on the team.
